Steps to the Monument
For a fresh start to a Freedom and Unity Monument in Leipzig, the Foundation Peaceful Revolution vom Leipziger Stadtrat beauftragt, ein Konzept für einen offenen Findungsprozess zu entwickeln. Dieser Prozess sollte folgende Arbeitsschritte umfassen:
- Dialogue with the citizens of Leipzig and the Federal Republic of Germany on the contents of the monument, during the length of the process.
- Locationsearch by a citizens' council* in a closed meeting, based on the recommendations of an expert council **
- Drafting of a Competition. procedure for the design of the monument, prepared by an expert council***..
During the participation process, the Peaceful Revolution Foundation will be supported and advised by the Leipzig Monument for Freedom and Unity's monitoring committee . This monitoring committee is composed of members of the 9th of October Initiative Group, Leipzig City Council and the municipal administration.
Lastly, Leipzig City Council consults and decides on the proposals developed during the participation process.
* The Citizens' Council for Location consists of 35 people residing in Leipzig who were anonymously and representatively selected by the Office for Statistics and Elections of the City of Leipzig according to criteria such as age, gender, etc. to represent the population of Leipzig.
** The Expert Council for Location was formed by nine public figures with a connection to the city of Leipzig.
*** Expert Council for Competition At the beginning of 2022, three competition experienced experts* for monument protection, art and architecture developed a specific concept for the Leipzig monument competition.
What’s more:
almost 80 percent of Leipzig residents and 70 percent of citizens nationwide are in favor of the planned Freedom and Unity Monument for the Federal Republic of Germany in Leipzig. At least according to a representative survey and its evaluation by the Hitschfeld Büro für strategische Kommunikation GmbH on behalf of the Foundation Peaceful Revolution.
However, only a minority has ever heard of the monument plans, specifically concerning the decision of the Bundestag and the city! Not even one in five in the old federal states and just under one in three people in the new federal states are aware of the "basic political decisions" on the memorial. Even in Leipzig, only a slight majority knows about the political decisions regarding this topic.
